Delft Earth
By the year 2075 there will be more than 9 billion people on Earth, according to United Nations projections: an increase of more than 40% in 69 years. Due to the growth in the world population and the growth in global prosperity, man is imposing a greater burden on the Earth. We are needing more raw materials, using more water, occupying more space. Moreover, we are vulnerable to natural disasters, because lack of space is forcing us to settle in vulnerable places.
Delft Earth is investigating ‘System Earth’ from diverse angles and disciplines. Objective: to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of our planet, both on the surface and in the Earth’s crust. This knowledge is of great importance to achieve more sustainable exploration and exploitation of natural resources such as fossil fuels and water, but also to enable more accurate forecasting of natural disasters and a better handling of their consequences. Delft Earth is one of the fourteen multidisciplinary Delft Research Centres. In these centres the best research of TU Delft has been brought together to solve concrete problems in society, both now and in the future. Delft Earth actively works together with a large number of companies and institutions engaged in the day-to-day practice. Read more about the cooperation with the knowledge partners.
